LAS VEGAS — It always causes a stir, even in Sin City.
But this year’s AVN Awards Show had the normally jaded local cabdrivers commenting on how adult has jazzed up the town again — at least for a few days as the stars and fans came out to party with porn.
Befitting its trendy venue in the Palm’s Pearl Theater, this year’s show opened with near-naked acrobats climbing and gyrating on ceiling high red drapery to the crushing hip hop beat of Baby Bash’s tune “Out-of-Control.” Comedy from Dave Attell helped set the mood for the audience with his description of himself as a greeter at the Olive Garden and remarking on the irony of how he entertained U.S. troops despite his “looking like one of the enemy.”
Industry favorites, standard Ron Jeremy jibes and accolades, a behind-the-scenes video and a Belladonna dance troupe rounded out the show hosted this year by Wicked picture’s Kirsten Price and Digital Playground starlet Kayden Kross. Fans brought their upbeat vibe from the streets with shout-outs to the hosts and other stars creating the feeling that despite a down economy, adult is coming back strong.
The crossover success of Sasha Grey and the continued interest in big-budget features from both producers and consumers added to the optimistic sense in 2010.
“Obviously, people want to watch adult films,” Grey said. “It’s accepted, but it’s so easy to trash and villify. It’s come a long way, but we have an opportunity to bring it even further, and then even further than that 10 years from now.”
For now, the success of parody movies like “Not the Cosbys XXX” and “The Sex Files: A Dark XXX Parody” continued to be hot properties along with the lavish, big-budget blockbusters like Adam & Eve’s doomsday feature “The 8th Day” that brought home seven awards, along with “Deviance” and Wicked Picture’s “2040.”
The surprises this year included a number of tied categories and the versatile dominance of star Tori Black who scored awards in a number of various categories.
